Law Garden is where Ahmedabad goes to buy Navratri. Every evening, stalls line the walls of the park in Ellisbridge with chaniya choli, embroidered jackets, oxidised jewellery and wall hangings, and in the weeks before Navratri the pavement is shoulder to shoulder.

Law Garden history

The park takes its name from the Law College on its western side; its official name is Sheth Motilal Hirabhai Park. The garden as it is today was redeveloped from 1995 and completed in 1997 to a design by the architect Kamal Mangaldas, on a little over ten acres.

The market grew up on its own. Hawkers set up stalls along the garden's walls, at first unplanned, and the evening trade became a fixture: there were stalls here even before the new park was finished. The food lane beside it, long known as the khau gully, was rebuilt by the city and reopened in 2020 as Happy Street.

What to buy at Law Garden market

  • Ready chaniya choli, from simple printed sets to heavily mirrored ones.
  • Kutch and Saurashtra work: mirror embroidery, patchwork and appliqué jackets and kotis.
  • Oxidised and costume jewellery, and accessories to match a Navratri outfit.
  • Dupattas, potlis and embroidered wall hangings.

Law Garden market timings

Come in the evening. Stalls set up around dusk and trade until late, roughly 11 pm, and the market is fullest after 8 pm. The busiest weeks of the year are the ones before Navratri; go early in the season for the best choice and the most patient sellers.

Law Garden shopping tips

  • Bargain. The first price leaves room.
  • Open the chaniya and check the flare, the lining and the inside seams.
  • Ready cholis come in a few sizes. Ask if there is margin to let out at the sides.
  • Look at mirror work and colours under a white light, not only the stall's bulbs.
  • Carry cash and UPI.

Getting your Law Garden chaniya choli to fit

A market choli rarely fits perfectly, and heavy embroidery makes it harder to alter. Bring it to Haggler Studio in Shela and we will take it in, let it out or reshape the neckline; or have a chaniya choli stitched to your measurements from the start.
