If someone in Ahmedabad is getting married, someone in the family is going to Ratanpol. The market fills the lanes between Gandhi Road and Relief Road in the old city with bridal lehengas, silk and bandhani sarees and festive chaniya choli, from small family shops to large wholesale showrooms.

Ratanpole market timings

The Ahmedabad heritage department lists Ratanpol as open from 10 am to 10 pm, with free entry. Each shop keeps its own hours.

Is Ratanpole market open on Sunday?

Listings disagree. Some say Ratanpol is closed on Sunday, others say it is open all week. Many shops do close on Sunday, so the safe plan is to go on a weekday, or call the shop you want before you leave.

Ratanpole market location and address

Ratanpol is in the walled old city of Ahmedabad, in the lanes that join Gandhi Road and Relief Road, next to Manek Chowk. The pin code is 380001. In Gujarati it is written રતનપોળ and in Hindi रतनपोल. People search it as Ratanpole, Ratanpol, Ratan Pol and Ratanpod; all of them are the same market.

How to reach Ratanpole market

The old city is easier without a car. These are the ways to get there:

  • Metro: the nearest station is Gheekanta, an underground station on the Blue Line (east to west line) in the old city. Get off there and walk through the old city to Ratanpol.
  • BRTS: the Janmarg BRTS stops at Raikhad Char Rasta and Municipal Corporation Office are close to Manek Chowk. From Manek Chowk you can walk into Ratanpol.
  • AMTS bus: many city bus routes end at Lal Darwaja, which is also in the old city. Take an auto from there if you do not want to walk.
  • Auto, bike taxi or cab: Rapido, Uber and Ola autos and bike taxis are the simplest way in. Ask to be dropped on Relief Road or Gandhi Road near Ratanpol, because a car cannot go far into the lanes.
  • Train: Ahmedabad (Kalupur) railway station is close, on the east side of the old city.

Check the route in Google Maps before you go. The old city lanes change direction often and some are one-way.

Ratanpole parking

Parking is the biggest problem at Ratanpol. The lanes are narrow and crowded, and in the wedding season the traffic on Relief Road and Gandhi Road barely moves.

  • Pay parking: the city (AMC) runs a pay-and-park opposite Ratanpole at Manek Chowk.
  • Rotary parking at Ratanpol Naka: in October 2026 the city's Central Zone engineering department was building Ahmedabad's first rotary car parking at Ratanpol Naka on Relief Road. Cars are lifted onto a turning frame, so about 12 cars fit where 2 could park before. It was still being built when this was written.
  • Two-wheelers are much easier to park than cars, but the lanes are crowded, so walk once you are inside the market.
  • Best plan: leave the car at home, or park it outside the old city and take an auto in.

Ratanpole bridal lehenga shops

Ratanpol is best known for bridal lehengas: heavy ghagra choli with zari, zardozi, sequins and stone work, in every price range.

When you buy a bridal lehenga here:

  • Lift it. A heavy lehenga is beautiful in the shop and tiring after five hours of a wedding.
  • Check the can-can and the lining inside the skirt; cheap lining scratches.
  • Ask whether the blouse is stitched or comes as an unstitched piece, and what alterations the shop includes.
  • Compare at least three shops before you pay. Prices for similar work can differ a lot.

Ratanpole saree market

The lanes are full of saree shops: silk, bandhani, party wear and cotton. Big names have a store here too; Asopalav has a Ratanpole showroom. The heritage department notes that many Ahmedabad chains opened their first or flagship store in Ratanpol.

Ratanpole chaniya choli market

Before Navratri, Ratanpol fills with festive chaniya choli: mirror work, bandhani, gota patti and printed sets. To compare, see our Law Garden market guide, the city's other big chaniya choli market.

Ratanpole wholesale market

Many Ratanpol shops sell wholesale to retailers, boutiques and resellers from other towns. Most still sell single pieces, so a family buying for one wedding is welcome. Wholesale prices need a bigger order; ask the shop what the minimum is.

What to buy in Ratanpole market

  • Bridal lehengas and heavy ghagra choli.
  • Sarees: silk, bandhani, party wear and cotton.
  • Festive chaniya choli for Navratri.
  • Dress material and blouse pieces to match.

Ratanpole market history

Ratanpol follows the plan of the walled city, where side streets off the main roads became markets for one trade each. In the 17th century this street was called Kothari Pathak, and it is part of Zaveri Vad, the jewellers' quarter. Before it became a cloth market it was mostly homes: traditional pol houses, many of them belonging to Jain jeweller families, the Zaveris. Jain temples, derasars, still stand in Waghan Pol and Shambhavnath Pol off the main street.

The houses turned into shops as the cloth trade grew, which is why so many showrooms here are narrow, deep and several storeys high.

Wedding shopping near Ratanpole

One trip to the old city can cover most of a wedding list:

  • Bridal jewellery: Manek Chowk and Zaveri Vad, the jewellers' quarter, are next to Ratanpol. See our Manek Chowk jewellery market guide.
  • Kankotri (wedding card) printing: many kankotri printers work in Khadia, also in the old city. Take your guest count and the wording with you.
  • Bandhani and everyday clothes: Teen Darwaza and Bhadra are a short walk away.

Ratanpole shopping tips

  • Go on a weekday, earlier in the day, and give yourself time to compare.
  • Prices are firmer in the established shops than in the street markets, but ask.
  • Carry water and wear comfortable shoes. You will walk a lot, and the lanes get hot.
  • Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket or a zipped bag in the crowd.
  • Take the blouse piece home and have the choli stitched to your measurements.

Blouse stitching after Ratanpole

Most Ratanpol lehengas and sarees need a blouse stitched or a fit adjusted. At Haggler Studio in Shela we stitch blouses and cholis to measure, and alter what you have bought. For the other markets, see Best Clothing Markets in Ahmedabad.
