Street shopping tips for Ahmedabad markets
- Bargain in the street markets. Start well below the first price and settle in the middle.
- Carry cash as well as UPI: not every stall takes UPI.
- Check the stitching, the inside seams and the colour in daylight before you pay.
- Ready chaniya choli come in a few fixed sizes. Ask whether the choli has margin to let out, and budget for a tailor.
- Go on a weekday if you can, and early in the Navratri season, before the rush.
- Parking in the old city is hard. An auto rickshaw, or a bus to Lal Darwaja, is easier.
- Keep your phone and bag close in the crowds at Teen Darwaza and Lal Darwaja.
Market or tailor-made: which is better?
Markets win on price, choice and the fun of it. What they cannot do is fit you: ready pieces come in standard sizes, and a heavily worked choli is hard to alter. If you want a chaniya choli or blouse cut to your own measurements, or a market find altered to fit, that is what a studio is for. At Haggler Studio in Shela we stitch to measure and alter what you already own, including pieces bought in these markets.
