Customers ask this more than anything else, usually while holding one and calling it two different things. The short answer: they are the same garment — a long flared skirt, a blouse, and a dupatta — named in different places and finished for different occasions.

Chaniya choli

The Gujarati name. Chaniya is the skirt, choli the blouse. This is the Garba outfit: the chaniya is cut for spin, with a full flare made of many panels (kali) so it opens into a circle when you turn, and it is kept light enough to dance in for hours. The choli is short and fitted, often with a tie-back. Embroidery, mirrors and gamthi work are on the blouse and the hem; the skirt itself is usually cotton, Roman silk or a printed fabric. The dupatta is tied across the body, out of the way.

Lehenga

The Hindi and north-Indian name, and the one the wedding industry uses. A lehenga choli is the same skirt and blouse but heavier: silk, velvet or net, with zari, sequin or zardozi work across the whole skirt, and a dupatta worn draped rather than tied. Weight is part of the point. Nobody spins in a wedding lehenga.

Ghagra

The Rajasthani name, and the oldest of the three. A ghagra is a gathered skirt — historically very full, up to several dozen metres of cloth pleated onto a waistband — worn with a kanchli or kurti and an odhni. In Rajasthan the everyday ghagra is cotton, often lehariya or bandhej with gota edging.

Which one for Navratri

A chaniya choli, because it is built to move. The things that matter are flare, weight and fit:

  • Flare: ask how many kali the chaniya has. Twelve is fine, twenty-four is a full circle, and the difference shows the first time you turn.
  • Weight: lift it. If it feels heavy in your hands it will feel heavier at midnight.
  • Fit: the choli must not ride up when your arms go over your head. This is a fitting problem, not a size problem, and it is why every choli in the studio is fitted before it leaves.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a chaniya choli and a lehenga?

Same skirt-and-blouse garment, different finish. A chaniya choli (the Gujarati name) is light, full-flared and made for Garba; a lehenga (the north-Indian name) is heavier, embellished across the skirt, and made for weddings.

How many kali should a chaniya have?

Twelve is fine; twenty-four gives a full circle that opens fully when you spin. The number of panels is the flare.

What is a ghagra?

The Rajasthani name for a gathered skirt worn with a kanchli or kurti and an odhni, historically very full. It is the oldest of the three names.
